On the other hand, I would definitely not use neon green for a professional company like a Law Firm or Dentists Office. Colors are also about branding. In the same way that McDonalds always uses Red and Yellow, you might want to find yourself some brandable colors so that when people see the logo, they know it belongs to you.
Using a symbol is not always the best option for your small business logo. Sometimes you might find that adding in your business name, if it’s short enough, is a superb way to minimize space on the small business logo and yet still get your point across accurately. If you are going to use a symbol or picture as your primary option, make sure you stick with items in your niche. A few months ago I saw a Private Eye’s logo; it was a pair of teeth. It really confused me and had me wondering what made him choose teeth and lips for a Detective and made no sense to me personally!

A professional logo designer is going to be able to sit down with you and go over all of the options as far as graphic styles and creation with you. They also might be able to suggest things you had not thought of or gently steer you away from something you are dead set on, but might not coordinate with your business all that well. The last tip is to portray a consistent image. If you get a designer to help with your logo, use it for everything. Don’t use a different logo for every single aspect of your company. Find one you love and use it for your small business logo, newsletters, emails, business cards, letterhead, sign, etc. You want to be consistent and yet have a versatile logo that you can use on any factor and any object. The same goes with any giveaway items you might be giving customers and clients including pens, coffee cups, pins, t-shirts or anything else you can think of.
